VIDEO KILLED THE RADIO STAR: ACMI

Any exhibition which greets me with a wall sized video of Beyonce’s “Single Ladies”, is A-OK by me.

ACMI Spectacle: The Music Video Exhibition, you do a good opening number.

HAUNTED BY HOT AIR BALLOONS

When I first moved to Melbourne I lived in on the top floor of an apartment building in Collingwood. The location was enviable with some of my favourite places to eat and drink in Melbourne at Β my doorstep. I even hadΒ a 7/11 on one corner and a kebab shop on the other for all my late night, drungry needs (a new term for drunk/hungry I am coining, it even sounds like you’re inebriated when you say it).

I’ve since moved a suburb away and while I’m not able to meander down to Sonsa Foods for their dolmas and salted chickpeas on a near daily basis, I’m relieved to have moved a couple of floors down. (more…)

CHAI CHALLENGE #1 – 2POCKET FAIRTRADE ESPRESSO

2Pocket Fairtrade Espresso is the current leader in my ‘Chai Challenge’ to find Melbourne’s best chai.

  1. It cannot be from a syrup
  2. They cannot abuse the milk (if not served separately) (more…)

I <3 MIDSUMMA

Melbourne’s annual Queer Celebration is easily the most diverse and dog friendly festival I’ve ever been to.

Yes, you read that correctly – dog friendly. Other than dog shows, I’ve never seen so many different kinds of pooches happily wandering around together.Β The festival even included dog shows ‘Best Bitch’ and ‘Most Butch’, won by a gorgeously fluffy Groodle (Golden Retriever/Poodle) and a denim-shorts wearing Greyhound.

It was a glorious, sunny, dog filled day. If you missed it last year, make sure it’s in your diary for next.

A DOUBLE-SHOT LATTE BY ANY OTHER NAME

Melbourne is a city defined by its love of coffee. With some of the best baristas and brews in the world it’s a well deserved reputation. So it’s fitting that my first post (!) is about one of my first caffeinated experiences here.

This is also a public service announcement for any coffee loving Perthians travelling to Melbourne: Baristas/cafes here do not serve long macchiatos ‘topped up’ as us Sandgropers call them. You’ll rarely see it on a menu and I was picked as a Western Australian ordering one on Chapel Street when I first moved here. (more…)
